Karra Porter is one of Utah’s most experienced and successful commercial litigation and appellate lawyers, making her an ideal choice to mediate or arbitrate cases that are factually or legally complex.
Karra obtained her B.A. in journalism from Kansas State University in 1985, graduated from law school at the University of Texas at Austin in 1987, and attended Pepperdine University's Straus Institute of Dispute Resolution for mediator training in 2011. She currently serves as President of Christensen & Jensen, and before that was the managing shareholder for many years. Karra served on the Utah Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on the Rules of Appellate Procedure for ten years, and currently serves on the Utah State Bar’s Ethics Advisory Opinion Committee.
In addition to numerous jury and bench trials, in her 23 years of practice, Karra has been lead counsel in nearly 100 appeals in Utah and surrounding states, and argues frequently at the Utah Supreme Court, Utah Court of Appeals, and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. She has also litigated hundreds of commercial matters including contract, construction, and insurance disputes, financial services liability, premises and product liability, professional liability, real estate and water disputes.
For several years running, Karra has been named by Super Lawyer magazine as not only a Super Lawyer in business litigation, but also as one of the Top 40 Women Attorneys in the Intermountain Region (Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Montana, and Wyoming). In June 2011 Super Lawyers honored her as one of the region's Top 75 lawyers overall. Karra has also been named by Utah Business magazine as among the Legal Elite in business litigation.
Karra’s practice has been evenly divided between representing plaintiffs and defendants, and she is able to see strengths and weaknesses from both sides of a case. Several years ago, Karra began mediating in niche areas where there were no established mediators, such as ERISA disputes. From there, she has branched out to handle a variety of commercial disputes, including business torts, intellectual property disputes, and employment matters.
Karra has been invited to speak at a wide variety of conferences and seminars, such as “Killer Cases and the Lawyers Who Brought Them,” “Hardball Litigation Tactics,” “Understanding the Legal Aspects of Professional Basketball,” "The Trial of Captain James T. Kirk," and “Reporters and Lawyers: Can’t We All Just Get Along?”
Karra enjoys running marathons. She is the author of Mad Seasons: The Story of the First Women’s Professional Basketball League 1978-1981 (University of Nebraska Press, 2006), and is working on her second book. A more complete biography is available at the firm’s website, http://www.chrisjen.com/.
