Jeffrey R. Oritt, Esq.
Jeff Oritt has been a civil trial lawyer for almost 30 years, after 16 wonderful years at Cohne, Rappaport & Segal, he joined Eisenberg, Gilchrist & Cutt as a senior litigator/shareholder in June, 2010. Even though the vast majority of civil disputes settle before trial, Jeff's experience includes trying to a verdict over 30 cases, in state and federal courts, in Utah and Wyoming. More than 20 of these trials were in front of juries. Jeff's litigation experience includes business contract disputes, probate battles, professional malpractice (with a particular expertise in legal malpractice), and personal injury claims. He has litigated cases in Utah, Arizona, California, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska and New Jersey. He has argued appeals before the Utah Court Appeals, Utah Supreme Court and Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.
When mediation started to grow as a method of alternative dispute resolution in Utah in the early 1990s, Jeff pushed his clients and opposing parties to mediate their disputes. Mediation can resolve the dispute quickly and give the parties control over the final disposition. As a result, Jeff has been involved, as a party's counsel, in at least 25 mediations over the past 15 years.
Jeff also has experience in arbitrations, both as a party's advocate and as a panel member, in commercial disputes and medical malpractice claims.
Jeff has served as a Special Master twice in insurance company insolvency actions, hearing and deciding over 60 insureds' health and other insurance coverage claims exceeding one million dollars total. He has also been a Receiver appointed by the Securities and Exchange Commission to collect and distribute assets to 187 investors in a multi-million dollar securities fraud case.
Jeff's experience in so many different areas of law, and his representation of plaintiffs and defendants, individuals and corporations, over almost 30 years of practice as a trial lawyer, has provided him with an unparalleled insight into creative dispute resolution. In addition, Jeff is a certified mediator, having completed the Strauss Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University School of Law, the leading mediation training program in the United States.
Jeff has served on numerous committees and sections of the Utah State Bar over the years. He is a member of the Board of Governors of the Utah Association for Justice (formerly Utah Trial Lawyers Association). He is an AV-rated lawyer, recognized as one of Utah's Legal Elite by Utah Business magazine as a trial lawyer, and has spoken and written on various topics, including legal malpractice and trial tactics.
